Main tower and clusters

Prasat Muang Tam is locate in Ban Khonk Muang,Tambon Chorakemak, Prahon Chai District,Buriram Province, about 8 kilometers southeast of Prasat Phnom.

The surrounding area is fertile with many important waterways including the Chorakemak Stream and the Pa Tia Stream.It is significantly situated on the main communication route that runs from Muang Phra Nakhon,the center of the ancient Khmer Kingdom,to Muang Phimai

Archaeological excavations at Khok salong Tong near Prasat Muang tam produced clear evidence showing that human settlements had been established in that area prior to construction of Prasat Muang tam, or in the later part of prehistoric period.

Prasat Muang Tam is a hindu religious sanctuary constructed with three type of building materials namely brick, sandstone and late rite. It is rectangular shaped measuring 120 meters by 127 meters and faces

The artistic details, which are in typical ancient Khmer style, show that the sanctuary was built about the 10th - 11th centuries, or about 1,000 years ago.

Prasat Muang Tam is a large size religious sanctuary comprising a number of large and small structure.

The center of the sanctuary symbolically represents the center of the universe and is the seat of the principle of the deity in accordance with Hindu religious belief .There is a cluster of 5 towers standing on the same base which can be divided into two rows with three in the front row and two in the rear row with the tower in the center being the principle tower .This is the largest tower but it is now in ruins with only the towers remain in good condition. The principle towel was originally decorated with stucco motifs, and all of which are now destroyed. In addition, there are several lintels deity such as Shiva and his consort Uma, Varuna on the swan, Krishna with cows, and Indra on the elephant Erawan. A large Shiva Linga has also been discovered in the vicinity of the brick towers.

To the front of the cluster of the brick towers are two tributary halls which would have been used as a repository for storing sacred texts and manuscripts. These are surrounded by a rectangular shaped gallery. In the center of each side of the gallery is a large access doorway. the lintels, gables and supporting wall columns are elaborately decorated with figures of deities such as Krishna quashing the serpent Kaliya and Indra on the elephant Erawan, and floral and vine motifs. A each of the four corners of the gallery is a large L-shaped pond. The bottom of each pond is a 5-headed Naga and two access stairways.
